Near
Airport
'll
be traveling with the boss from Japan to Albany from 12/9 to 12/17. I'll be
doing interpreting work from 8 to 5 but I'll be free after that. We'll be
staying at the Comfort Inn Airport. Is there anything to do near the airport?
Will I be stuck in the room with TV and internet? My boss will rent a car but I
don't want to be with him after work. I'd rather be on my own. Where can I go
by taxi (or bus?) that's close enough but won't be too expensive a ride to and
from?
Near Railway Station
The State
Department of Transportation today settled a longstanding lawsuit with Amtrak
over a never-completed project to bring high-speed rail to the Albany-New York
run. And though the settlement will not itself bring the project to fruition,
it may open the door to significant capital and track improvements that could
bring down times on the train ride deeply familiar to, among others, Albany
lawmakers from downstate districts, who take the train twice a week during much
of the year.
High-speed
rail between New York’s biggest city and its state capital has been a glimmer
in the eye of governors, lawmakers, and planners for years. And in 1998, the
state signed an agreement with Amtrak to recondition some old trains with
better engines and straighten out some of the tracks between Albany and New
York so that the trains could pick up speed. The two-and-a-half-hour ride -on a
good day - would drop to two hours, and the agreement was hailed as potentially
a national model for high-speed rail.
