History
of Abu Dhabi Region
Abu Dhabi was inhabited about 250 years ago when the Bani
Yas (a nomadic tribe) discovered water on the Island of Abu Dhabi in 1760 and
constructed their first town. Abu Dhabi remained a small fishing village until
oil was discovered. The transformation from small village to modern city was

As the Capital of the United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi is the center of government and business life in the UAE. All the embassies, most of the oil company headquarters and the parliamentary buildings are located in Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi offers many cultural destinations such as the Al Hosn Palace, commonly known as the White Fort; Heritage Village, a living exhibition of culture; the Cultural Foundation, featuring art exhibits, a library and theatre auditorium and the nearby Al Ain Zoo and Aquarium. The Corniche is a park-lined coastal boulevard providing one of the most picturesque sites in Abu Dhabi.
The city is a convenient base for visits to Al Ain, the Garden City of the Gulf
and the Liwa Oasis, one of the largest oasis in Arabia.

Heritage Village
Heritage Village is an authentic replica of a Bedouin encampment before oil wealth struck the area. Mud-brick houses, a traditional mosque, shopping in a traditional souq, taking a camel ride and watching a demonstration of the sport of falconry are highlights of the village. Heritage Village is located in the center of Abu Dhabi providing living exhibits of the lifestyle and traditions of the Bedouin and other local cultures. One exhibit recreates farming life in an oasis while another highlights the life of a coastal fisherman, trader or pearl diver. Visitors can sample a typical Bedouin meal and see displays of horsemanship and camel riding. Women's Craft Center The Women's Craft Center is a government run handicraft center that provides a good place for visitors to see the skills of the local women on display. Weaving, embroidery, sewing, basketry and other methods of handicrafts are featured in working demonstrations. These traditional handicrafts, artifacts and souvenirs are for sale and photographs may be taken of the handicraft items but not the artists. The products are high quality and include items such as shawls, woven bags, rugs, cushion covers, coffee pots, trays and baskets.
