History
of Taupo
Taupo (pop. 19,000), at the northeast corner of the lake,
is still a relatively young town, having grown to its present size only since
the 1950s. Its growth was stimulated by the construction of new roads, the
development of the volcanic plateau by redeforestation with pines, the
harnessing of geothermal energy and above all by tourism. The lake
, in which Californian rainbow trout have flourished
since the late 19th C., has become a popular holiday destination. It also makes
a pleasant stopover on the journey from Wellington to Auckland. Numerous
hotels, motels, holiday houses and motor camps cater for visitors; many of them
have their own swimming pools of thermal water.

How
to reach Taupo
By rail :
By
Road :
By bus
Intercity [3], Newmans [4] and Nakedbus [5] offer coach services to/from Taupo several times a day to most destinations throughout the North Island. Adventure travel networks in the form of Kiwi Experience, Magic Bus, Stray and Contiki also visit Taupo (daily in summer).
By car
It does pay
to allow additional time over the Christmas/New Year period and on public
holidays as highway congestion can add greatly to travel times.
By Air :
Taupo
Airport [2] also provides for private jets and other aircraft and is the
busiest parachute drop zone in New Zealand. Scenic flights and skydiving are a
popular attraction for the region.
Best
Buying Taupo
Everyone
needs a supermarket for supplies, whatever they may be. This is a very
interesting shop. Lots of variety and best of all, open 7 days a week 6.00am
until midnight.
Food, and most personal supplies for travellers. In fact because of the international population of this town the supermarket seems to stock lots of intersting things. I really enjoy shopping here. But then I'm from small town Waikato! This shop is great for contemporary ethnic art. The items here are very attractive and authentic, and of very high quality. I like the jewellery, but you can find wall hangings, art, and all sorts of items for around the house. I highly recommend this shop. Well the good stuff is not cheap, but it's not so overpriced you can't afford at least something.
