History of Monkey Jungle Monkey Jungle was founded in 1933 by Joseph DuMond as a study habitat for primate behavior. Six crab-eating Macaques from southeast Asia were released onto the original 10-acre site, and descendants of those original six are now a colony numbering in the hundreds. To fund his research, DuMond began allowing visitors to the site for 10 cents, but the territorial monkeys viewed the human visitors as intruders. To alleviate this problem he built a cage for the humans, similar to the system in place today, where visitors walk in caged pathways while the monkeys roam free. In addition to the original study area, the DuMond Conservancy has developed a 4-acre Amazonian Rainforest area where endangered monkeys have been successfully bred. A small group of retired laboratory animals are also cared for at this facility. King the Gorilla was recently moved to his own island habitat and this new area will be open to the public by the middle of 2001. Interestingly, King's previous small caged habitat (seemingly against DuMond's original philosophy) was the cause of much controversy and Monkey Jungle added a more humane habitat for this creature due to the protests.
