History of Kozhikode Calicut-Kozhikode is a well known tourist attraction which is a part of Cochin-Trichur-Kozhikode- Wynad- Mysore- Bangalore circuit in the states of Kerala and Karnataka.
Kappad in Calicut is the place where
Vasco da Gama set foot for the first time when he came to India on May 27,
1498. There is a small stone monument at the beach to commemorate that event.
Pazhassirajah Museum is located on the East Hill. It is run by the State
Archeological Department. Ancient mural paintings, antique bronzes, old coins,
models of temples, and megalithic structures are on display here. Situated next
to Pazhassirajah Museum is an art gallery displaying paintings of Raja Ravi Varma.
Dolphin's Point is a good place to watch dolphins playing in the sea early in
the morning. On this beach are also situated Calicut Town Center, Lions Club,
and a lighthouse.
Two crumbling piers, more than
hundred years old, stand out into sea at Kozhikode beach. The beach is easily
accessible from the city and provides a good view of the setting sun. The place
also has a Marine Life Aquarium open whole day.
The Science Planetarium at Jaffarkhan Colony is the best place to unravel the
mysteries of universe and enlightens about the planets and stars. The Science
Center has an interesting array of games, puzzles, and scientific gadgetry,
which can keep a person busy for the whole day. The planetarium and Science
Center are in the same complex. Mananchira, which was the palace tank of King
Mana Vikrama, has been now turned into a traditional architectural splendor
with carpeted green grass and surrounded by ethnic buildings. The place also
has a musical fountain.
Tourist Attractions in Calicut-Kozhikode
You can have
a glimpse of the rich historic past of Kozhikode in the Pazhassiraja Museum,
which is located at East Hill, 5 km from the city. The state archaeological
department runs this museum. The various galleries within this museum have an
extensive collection of artefacts that range from ancient coins, bronze
objects, copies of ancient murals, etc., depicting the rich cultural heritage
of this region. The exhibits of the megaliths (huge prehistoric monuments) are
quite interesting. This museum is open for public viewing from 10 am to 12.30
pm and from 2.30 pm to 5 pm everyday except on Mondays and public holidays.
Badagara (Commercial Centre)
48 kms from Kozhikode, in Badagara is Kalaripayattu, which is a flourishing,
and great commercial centre of martial arts. Badagara is also famous for being
the birthplace of Thacholi Othanan, the hero of the ballads of North Malabar.
Krishna Menon Museum
The Krishna Menon Museum has a section in honour of the great Indian V.K.
Krishna Menon, whose personal belongings and souvenirs gifted to this world
leader are exhibited here.
Kuttiyadi (hydro electric power project)
70kms from Kozhikode, this picturesque village is the site of a major
hydroelectric project called the 'Kuttiyadi Hydro electric power project".
Beypore
10 kms South of Kozhikode, located at the mouth of the River Chaliyar is
Beypore, a small coastal town and boat building industry which was for
centuries, one of the prominent port and fishing harbours of ancient Kerala. It
was much sought after, by merchants of Western Asia for its boat building
industry and even today, Beypore is still a favourite destination among Arabs,
shopping for large boats. The boat-building yard here is also very famous today
for its country crafts called 'Uru' built by traditional boat builders, known
as Khalasis.
Dolphin's Point
Here one can see in the early hours of the morning dolphins playing in the sea.
The beach, 2kms from Kozhikode town center is a along stretch of tree lined
sand, popular with the local people because of the lions club park, the
lighthouse and the two piers. People love taking long walks here in the evenings,
because of the lovely evening breeze.
Kappad (beach)
16kms from Kozhikode, this is the historic beach where Vasco-da-Gama landed on
27th May 1498, with 170 men in three vessels. A small stone monument at the
beach commemorates a memorial, which marks the landing place. This rock studded
pleasant beach is locally known as Kappakadavu. An interesting feature of the
landscape is the sprawling rock that protrudes into the sea. The ancient temple
on the rock is believed to be 800 years old. The Kappad beach resort is one of
the leading centers for Ayurvedic Health Holiday in Kerala.
Thikkoti Lighthouse
22kms from Kozhikode is the lighthouse, which overlooks Velliyamkallu, the rock
much dreaded by navigators, off Moodadi coast, which was built after a ship,
wreck and the remains of which can still be seen here. The Velliyamkallu rock
is the transit home of migratory birds.
Manchiria (tourist place)
Manchiria is the heart of the city, which cites important institutions like
town hall and the public library. One of Kozhikode's oldest buildings, the
common wealth trust office is situated here. The large pond and the park are
well known landmarks.
Pazhassirajah Museum and art Gallery
5 kms from Kozhikode, located at east hill, the Pazhassirajah museum, run by the
state archaeological department display ancient mural paintings, antique
bronzes and old coins as well as models of temples, megalithic monuments like
dolmonoid cysts and umbrella stones. Adjacent to the museum, is the art
gallery, which exhibits an excellent collection of paintings by Raja Ravi
Varma.
Tellicherry and Sultan Bathery (Trading Centre)
These are important trading centers of Kozhikode. The road from Kozhikode to
Sultan Batthery (98kms) through a full of steep climbs and hairpin curves, offers
breath taking scenic drive. From Sultan Batthery, it is only 6hours to
Bangalore.
Backwater of Kozhikode
Unexplored and unspoiled are the backwaters of Kozhikode, which holds great
promises of enchanting holiday options. Elathur, the canal and the River Kallai
are favourite haunts for boating. Kadlundi, with its beautiful bird sanctuary
is a charming site. Korapuzha, the venue of the Korapuzha Jalotsavam is fast
becoming a popular water sport destination.
Tusharagiri
Though Tusharagiri is located near Vythiri in Wayanad. It is famous for
trekking tracks from Kozhikode. It is around 50 kms from Kozhikode. It is a one
day trekking through this pristine, evergreen dense forests populated with
exotic brids and wild animals to reach Vythiri by evening.
Vellarimala
Vellarimala in the hilly reaches of Kozhikode district is a pristine place, not
crowded by tourists. The place is ideal for relaxing, taking your spirits
through the meandering natural beauties from dawn to dusk. The Kanjirapuzha,
tributary of the River Chaliyar, takes a winding path through rocky terrain,
forming attractive waterfalls at many points. One can undertake an adventurous
trekking trip and reach Chandakkunnu near Nilambur in Mallapuram district,
where the Kanjirapuzha joins the Chaliyar.
