Most of the domestic airlines have
direct services to and from Calcutta-Kolkata to other important cities of India
such as Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Patna, Varanasi, Lucknow, etc. Calcutta-Kolkata
provides direct flights to most of the countries in the Southeast Asia. The
airport in Calcutta-Kolkata is situated at Dumdum, around 17 km northeast of
the city center.

Trains from the other parts of the
country connect Calcutta-Kolkata. Super-fast trains such as Rajdhani Express
and Shatabdi Express join the city from Delhi and nearby cities such as Bokaro
and Rourkela. Coromandel Express and Gitanjali Express connect Calcutta-Kolkata
to Chennai and Mumbai respectively. The city has two major railway stations-one
at Howrah and the other at Sealdah.
By Water
Mechanized
boats and ships are available on a regular basis for Andaman & Nicobar
Islands. One should contact the offices of the Shipping Corporation of India on
13, Strand Road for more information on schedules. Luxury cruises are also
operational between Calcutta-Kolkata and Haldia, a modern port city nearby.
By Road
Kolkata is also well connected by the road
transport as it has a key bus terminus which is at Esplanade and connects the
major cities of West Bengal.
Best buying Kolkata
As I have mentioned in my several tips the City Of Kolkata is changing very
fast with very positive attitude! The positive attitude includes people
behaviour also. With the changing scenario the latest addition is South Ciy
Shopping Mall. You get everything you desire. Built in the pattern of American
shopping malls, it is the largest shopping mall in India and built inside the
city. The shops are right from grocery ( Spencers) to Swaroski crystals. There
is even a Dollar shop, where you can buy American goods at a bargain price! It
also has 6 cinema halls,10 restaurants, fast food counters, many escalators, a
parking space to house 1300 cars! The speciality restaurant Mainland China has
also opened their second restaurant there. The whole place is air conditioned.
The South City will have 1700 apartments in 4, 35 floored buildings and
expected to open very soon ( the apartments)
This place is surely going to change or standard of living. This place is with
in one kilometer from our residence. We took our American VT guest from Long
Beach, California, Sonia and her father Prof. M.K.Das to visit this place last
Sunday 3rd Feb. We also dined at the latest Mainland China!
Kolkata like the other metro's, offers an enthusiastic shopper a range of commodities that suit every budget. There are a lot of markets or malls selling all kinds of wares from Bengal's very own Tant and Baluchari sarees in cotton and silk, Bengal handlooms with their beautiful workmanship in popular styles such as Daccai or Thangail Jamdani work, handicrafts including brass figurines and the famous Bankura horse, leather items at reasonable rates, intricate gold and silver jewelry, electronic goods, Chinese imported goods in China town and others at good bargains. The following are some of the popular shopping places in the city.
New
Market
The Sir Hogg
Market better known as New Market located at 19, Lindsay street is arguably one
of Calcutta's best shopping centers. Designed by an East Indian
Railway Company Architect, it was opened in 1874 and named after the
commissioner, Sir Stuart Hogg. Earlier it had a garden with a silvery fountain
and benches for tired shoppers. Today, it continues to be a premier shopping
area despite a part of it being burnt down in late 1985. Its red brick Gothic
clock tower bears testimony to past grandeur. Linen to cakes, fruits to fish,
all and sundry is available in wide ranging choices and prices. There are 2000
stalls in seven blocks and the remarkable feature of these stalls is that they
are arranged merchandise wise i.e. there are rows of stalls dealing with one
particular line of goods. It is the best place for bargaining. Open 10.30
am to 7.30 pm from Monday to Friday and Saturdays till 2:30 pm. Sunday
holiday.
Close to New
Market are the Treasure Island (A/C mall) and the Shreeram Arcade shopping
malls mainly dealing with clothes, both Indian and
Western, footwear, costume jewellery, music CD's, tapes etc. These malls open
from from 10am-8pm from Tuesday to Saturday and from 1 pm - 8pm on Mondays.
Sunday holiday.
