Shopping in Amritsar is a delightful experience for the avid shopper. The state of Punjab has a fairly rich tradition of handicrafts and handlooms.The state is noted for exquisite handicrafts like phulkari (traditional embroidery), lacquered woodwork, jewelry etc. These are the items, you should look for while shopping in Amritsar. Also go for the Punjabi jutis (shoes), which are typical of this region. Hand-woven carpets, blankets, woolen garments and of course Patiala salwar (the traditional Indian garments with a Punjabi twist in design) are hit with those who want to do some shopping in Amritsar.
Jams, jellies and pickles of Punjab are quite famous and are available in Amritsar in galore. Do not forget to pick up a bottle or two along with some dry fruits while shopping in Amritsar. Near Airport: Amritsar International Airport is popularly known as Raja Sansi International Airport. The airport is named after Maharaja Ranjit Singh's family name - Sansi. Amritsar Airport is located 11 km north-west from the city of Amritsar, India and serves a large number of expatriate Punjabis. Amritsar Airport was refurbished recently. A newly finished Arrivals Terminal was inaugurated in September 2005, and finished Departures Terminal has been operational since March 2006. Airlines currently operating from Amritsar Airport are Turkmenistan Airlines, Uzbekistan Airlines, Alliance Air, Indian Airlines and Air India.
Near Railway Station:
Amritsar Junction Railway Station is a railhead of the Northern Railways. Kathihar Express, New Delhi Express, Howrah Express and Shatabdi Express are the important trains that pass through the station. Traveling south, the major railhead is at Gurdaspur (71 km). Tourist Information Center is provided on the premises.
In the immediate vicinity of the station, Hotel Royal Castle, Mohan International Hotel and Grand Hotel offer excellent and comfortable accommodation. Just 3 km from the station is the bus station. Amritsar International Airport is the nearest airport (11 km). |
