History of Yaoundé

Yaoundé was founded in 1888 by German traders as a base for the ivory trade and an agricultural research station. It was occupied by Belgian troops during World War I. After Germany's defeat, France became the colonial power in eastern Cameroon, and Yaoundé became the capital of French Cameroon. It has continued as the capital of the Republic of Cameroon until the present day.

Tourist Attractions in Yaoundé

Cameroon Art Museum

This small Camerounese art museum was inaugurated in January 1910. Most of the museum's specimens originate from the Tikar, Bamoun and Bamileke populations. Part of the website on "Cameroon: Masks and statues", hosted by Unesco, under the coordination of Emmanuel Tonye, Yaounde - Cameroon.

Cameroon National Museum

This museum is the center of all public museums in Cameroon. Collection includes traditional art objects, modern paintings, archaeological sculptures and specimens of the prehistoric Sao civilization of northern Cameroon. Part of the website "Cameroon: Masks and statues", hosted by Unesco, coordinated by Emmanuel Tonye, Yaounde - Cameroon

The Limb Botanic Garden

Ducks and other wildlife roam the grounds of the San Antonio Botanical Garden, bringing joy to children and adults alike.

Afhemi Museum.
Over the years Mus'Art has collaborated with the AFHEMI Museum in Yaounde in the area of information sharing. The two museums continue to work closely though not by any formal agreement. We see such collaboration to be very important since both museums are private and face similar difficulties. By working together, we can find common solutions which could help us in our missions and in the development of private museums in Cameroon.

Yaoundé
Yaoundé is the site of some universities, the University of Yaoundé I, University of Yaoundé II (on a campus outside of town), and the Catholic University for Central Africa (UCAC). Several of the nations professional schools are also located in Yaounde (Ecole Normal Superieur for teachers, Ecole Militaire InterArmes du Cameroun, as well as various schools for engineers, nurses and diplomats).
