History of bali

Bali, island of a thousand temples- charming, beautiful, captivating and alluring. Images of lush, green paddy fields, ancient temples, exotic beauties performing traditional dances, friendly people, peaceful beaches and intricate carvings arise when one thinks of Bali. It is this combination that makes Bali so special and memorable.

It is certain that Bali has been inhabited since early prehistoric times. Fossilized human remains have been discovered from neighboring Java, which are dated to be as old as 250,000 years. Stone tools and earthenware vessels, which were estimated to be 3000 years old, were unearthed near Cekik (west Bali). Other artifacts also show that the Bronze Age began in Bali before 300 BC. Hinduism spread its influence around 400 AD followed by Buddhism in 500 AD. Bali and West Java then underwent several episodes of conquering that includes conquering each other until the Dutch arrived and established themselves partially in Bali in 1850. Dutch troops landed in Sanur Beach in 1900 and Bali was then completely occupied by them. Many prominent families committed suicide due to this defeat. After the Japanese occupation in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945, Bali became an Indonesian province but was able to maintain its own unique culture.

Gunung Batur
Gunung Batur (1717m) , the large volcano located in the eastern highlands has caused all kind of trouble in the past from its eruptions, which have occurred more than 20 times since 1800. A 1917 eruption killed 1,000 local people and amazingly the boiling lava stopped just short of the temple at Batur village. In those day the village of Batur was located on the west side of Lake Batur, which is inside the crater.

August 3rd 1926 was the next big eruption that surrounded the village of Batur and the temple. The locals were evacuated and the village of Batur and the temple were relocated to the crater rim. This eruption formed Batur I, the main crater. September 1963 saw another eruption that continues till May 1964. Things stayed peaceful until March 1974 when an eruption emitted lava flows as far as Yehmampeh on the crater floor.

Kuta Bay

Kuta Beach is a little stinky right now. On Sunday Ika and I took Jevon to the windblown Blue Ocean beach at the end of Jl. Double Six. There’s a kid’s playground there and its good for him to meet new children. While there we noticed the strong smell coming from the water.

Ika’s sister told us that Kuta beach stinks, while today Bali Discovery reports the culprit was mysterious red globs. A special micro-organic compound has been sprayed on Kuta Beach to help the globs decompose. They should use Coca Cola. In the US the cops sometimes carry it to clean up an accident / murder site, the acid eats anything you put in its path.

Global warning combined with increased water pollution is no doubt damaging the marine life, so its not surprising that once in a while the ocean sends us a message. Riding by today the smell on Kuta Beach was not offensive, so hopefully things will be better soon.

Bali Orchid Garden
Bali Orchid Garden, reached from Jln Bypass Ngurah Rai, Tohpati, is approximately 10 minutes north of Sanur, Bali and easily accessed en route to or from other northern and easterly tourist sites. The hectare of landscaped tropical gardens provides a beautiful and relaxing tropical garden with exquisite orchids blooming throughout the year. It is open for individual tourists or tour groups. Friendly staff will escort and explain the wide variety of tropical plants and help you discover many orchid treasures. The garden has a well stocked souvenir store with items as diverse as jewellery, T-shirts, paintings, candles, honey and flasks of orchid plants. Boxes of tropical flowers including Heliconia, Anthuriums and Orchids can be purchased for you to take home. Full export clearance papers are provided and boxes can be delivered to your hotel.

Gunung Kawi

Then we were off to Gunung Kawi, the Rock Temple of the Ancients, near Tampaksiring. The countryside here is gorgeously lush, and the footpath down to the temple passes through breathtakingly beautiful rice terraces.

Here are some views from the footpath which leads from the road down to the temple, which lies at the bottom of a valley. You could hear the sounds of water trickling along the irrigation channels.

Museum Le Mayeur
The Museum Le Mayeur in Sanur is definitely a must-see place in Bali for the simple reason that some of Belgian artist Andrien Jean Le Mayeurs finest paintings of his lovely wife Ni Pollok, who often modeled for him, are housed here. Located just steps away from Sanur Beach, the museum is flanked by the Grand Bali Beach Hotel to the south and Pura Dalem (Temple of the Dead) and the Diwangkara Hotel on the north. The museum features a good variety of the artist’s paintings in both oil and water colors. Most of his paintings are of his wife Ni Pollok or other young Balinese women in various states of repose or doing traditional crafts such as weaving. La Mayeur’s works capture the natural beauty of Bali and its culture long ago. With each brush stroke the viewer can envision the passion he had for his art and his wife Ni Pollok.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan
This very important Hindu-Buddhist temple was founded in the 17th century. It is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the waters, and is actually built on small islands, which means it is completely surrounded by the lake. Both pilgrimages and ceremonies are held here to ensure that there is a supply of water for farmers all over Bali.
